Abstract The scope of application of hydromechanical transmissions is reviewed. The standard approach of conducting patent-informational and computational investigations of high-power hydromechanical transmissions is developed. Some elements of this research have a universal meaning and can be extended to a wide class of transmission systems with complex geared mechanisms. Computational research includes determination of parameters of gear sets using gear ratios, creating velocity diagrams, kinematic (angular velocities) and torque calculations of transmission schemes, gearbox evaluation according to criteria of rated parameters and configuration of transmission. Basic stages of searching information are described. The main attention is given to planetary gear sets, widely used in high-power transmissions. Thus, a complex technique of comprehensive analysis of transmission properties at the initial, the most important stage of selecting potential promising solutions for the packaging and dynamic analysis is described and illustrated by numerous examples. Results of investigation using data of patent research in area of hydromechanical transmissions will be published in the second part of this article.
